What Is Mediation? And How You Can Get Started Today!

Meditation seems to be gaining popularity every single day, and for a good reason—meditation has many mental and physical benefits. Today, we want to talk about what meditation is, how you can add it to your routine, and where you can find some free meditation resources.

What Is Meditation?

Meditation, similar to yoga, has many different forms. But, in general, meditation is a technique some people use to focus in on a thought, feeling, or object, to find stillness and mental clarity. Depending on where you look, sources report different numbers of meditation styles. Some sources say that there are six types of meditation, some say 23, and other sources say everything in-between. But for our purposes, we will list out four of them: transcendental, mindfulness, focused, and guided.

Transcendental Meditation

You have probably heard of transcendental meditation, it is widely practiced and typically involves a mantra that you focus on for a specific amount of time, a few times a day. While a lot of meditation can be learned online or through other resources, this form must be learned with an instructor associated with the Maharishi Foundation.

Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness is a practice that allows us to tap into the here and now, and be aware of how we feel and what is surrounding us. When we think of meditation, we often think of total stillness. No thought, just meditation. But, mindfulness teaches us to recognize our thoughts. So, you do not have to squash down your thoughts at all. In fact, you can note them as you meditate, “I just thought of work, how interesting.” Mindfulness also teaches you to focus on your breath and scan your body to check-in on how you feel from head to toe.

Focused Meditation

For some of us, focusing on a single thing is helpful to still our minds and allow for the meditative state. Focused meditation is just that. It teaches you to hone in on an object, sound, or feeling. It is similar to mindfulness as it is something that you can learn on your own, and practice at any time.

Guided Meditation

As a beginner to meditating, guided meditation allows you to learn the tools for meditating with an instructor. The teacher will tell you what you can expect during your meditation, lead you through the practice, and teach you how to use meditation in your day-to-day life.
