An Interview With Chuze Fitness Fontana Muralist, Dack Williams

Community is something we foster at every Chuze fitness location. Each community is unique to its location, and working to support local artists and small businesses helps us connect with people and create long-lasting relationships. Vehicles like music, dance, fitness, visual arts, and self-expression drive us towards deeper community roots. We recently connected with Dack Williams, a Fontana-based muralist, and worked with him to create an incredible mural for our brand-new Fontana California gym location. He took some time to chat with us about his background and process.

1. Can you briefly walk us through the story of how you became an artist?

I have been doing some form of art since the age of 4. Whether it was drawing on my mom’s walls with crayons or painting backdrops for plays at the age of 14. I became an artist because I love to create and I love being able to express myself with no boundaries. 

2. Why do you think it is important to include art within your community?

I think it’s important to add artwork to the community because it brings inspiration to young artists. I was one of those artists. I was inspired by seeing work wherever it be, on the streets or in businesses. It inspired me to get better at my craft.

3. Please explain your inspiration for the design of the Chuze Fontana mural.

I chose this design to represent the city of Fontana, the ‘City of Action’ because if you look north of the 210 freeway you can see the mountains. I also added the palm trees because it reminds me of the Fontana city logo [and] the raceway flag is designed to show homage to the Auto Club Speedway that is in the heart of the city.

5. How was your experience working with Chuze?

My experience working with Chuze Fitness was great! I like the idea of them commissioning local artists from the same community as the locations of the gyms. Bringing in artists from these communities makes the art become more expressive and can make the artist show his pride in the community they come from.
