In this article, we’ll review seven of the area’s best parks to consider checking out this season:
- Carpenter Park: If you and your loved ones can’t decide upon a favorite open-air activity, don’t worry – Carpenter Park’s got you covered! Located at 3498 E. 112th Avenue (directly behind the Carpenter Recreation Center) in Thornton, this 150-acre site has seen many improvements in recent years. Whether you’re in the mood to watch live entertainment in the amphitheater, keep your cool in the sprayground, or work on your kickflips in the skatepark, there are dozens of activities sure to please everyone in your group. Other attractions include a boathouse, a carousel, a playground, and nature trails, plus various courts and sports for athletes of every skill level. In addition, residents and non-residents alike can rent out Carpenter’s party facility for private events. - Hunters Glen Lake: If you’re looking for a scenic local fishing spot known for its warm-water species, Hunters Glen Lake is a picturesque lake located on East 128th Avenue in Thornton. Featuring piers, pavilions, playgrounds, breathtaking mountain views, a concrete walking path around the lake and great accessibility for fishing, this secluded 6-acre park is also kid-friendly. According to the official City of Thornton site, guests may also use non-motorized boats for a leisurely day at the park.
- Homestead Hills Park: When you’re in need of a little quiet reflection, Homestead Hills Park may be just the park for you. An 18-acre park with 3.5 across of bluegrass atop a ridge, this destination offers magnificent views of the Rocky Mountains, as well as a pavilion, walking paths, a perennial garden and a playground for the kids. Many locals marvel at the incredible 360-degree views, noting it’s the perfect spot to snap some scenic sunrises and sunsets. It’s also dog-friendly, too, making it an ideal park for families with fur-babies. Located at 140th Avenue and Ash Street in Thornton, CO, this is yet another state treasure worth the trip.
- Yorkborough Park Thornton: Boasting over 12 acres, Yorkborough Park offers plenty of recreational activities to its guests. For those who enjoy a spontaneous picnic or barbecue, there are grills available for family outings, including a 40’ x 40’ lighted pavilion with six picnic tables. Visitors also have easy access to two playgrounds, two tennis courts, a ball field, a sand volleyball court (you must supply your own net) and a bike trail. Located at 98th Detroit Street in Thornton, amenities include street parking and a restroom. Amplified sound is allowed if you apply for a sound permit
- Cherry Park: For those who enjoy a game of basketball, you may want to put Cherry Park on your to-do list this summer. Featuring a full basketball court, guests will also appreciate a 40’ x 40’ lighted pavilion nestled inside this gorgeous 25.4-acre park in central Thornton (11500 Birch Drive). In addition to this shade-shelter with six picnic tables, visitors have convenient access to a playground, a large multipurpose field, two ball fields and a beautiful lake located approximately 600 yards north of the pavilion. As is the case in most other local parks, amplified sound is grantable with a sound permit.
- Community Park: One of the larger parks in the area, Community Park is situated on 45.1 acres and is located just south of Thornton Parkway between Colorado Boulevard and Washington Street (2141 E. 95th Avenue) in Thornton. It offers not one but two lighted pavilions, each equipped with picnic tables and electrical outlets for the convenience of its visitors. Amenities for the park include three baseball fields, a playground, skate park, grass volleyball court (guests must supply their own net), a full basketball court, tennis court, in-line hockey rink, a seasonal swimming pool (additional entry fee) and a bike trail which goes through the park and surrounding areas. Another bonus: ample parking in a lot that includes 375 parking spaces. Unlike many other local parks, a special 3.2 alcohol permit can be requested for these pavilions which involves an additional $100 deposit and $25 application fee.
- Woodglen-Brookshire Park: Nestled inside breathtaking 13.6-acre Woodglen-Brookshire Park, guests will enjoy such amenities as a 40’ x 40’ lighted pavilion, including nine picnic tables for outdoor gatherings. Other highlights include a playground, two half-court basketball courts, one full-court basketball court, two sand volleyball courts (must provide own net), a ball field, a large multipurpose field and two tennis courts. Additionally, four restrooms are available onsite; one in each area is handicapped-accessible. Park guests will also appreciate ample parking, with 137 spaces available onsite. There is also a lovely bike trail that runs through the park and connects with the City trail system. As in some of the larger parks listed previously, amplified sound and alcohol permits are available if you apply with a permit and/or pay an additional deposit and fee.
