Whether you are looking to join a gym for the first time, re-join the gym scene after a hiatus, or switch gyms, there are a number of factors you should take into account when making your decision on which gym is right for you. Like most things, some factors will matter more to you than others during this process.

In no particular order, the list below should provide you with a number of items to consider, and ways to aid you in making your final choice.

Location

It’s difficult enough as it is to find the time in your busy schedule to fit in a work out. The last thing you want to worry about is driving 30 minutes out of your way to use a gym facility before or after work. A great place to start when deciding on gym memberships is to look up all of the local gyms near you to get an idea of what’s out there. Proximity and convenience are key because they play a large role in how often you will get over to the gym.

Price

The cost is important in a decision like this, because you want to get as much value as possible when making a consistent monthly payment on something. Can you afford the monthly membership? Is the price worth it to you based on what the membership and facility offer?

Cleanliness

How clean a gym facility is kept says a lot about the brand and the pride that the employees take in working there. Not only should a gym be kept spotless and germ free for health reasons, but also for visual appeal. No one likes to work out in an unkempt environment.

Accommodations

How is the facility set up? Are their lockers large enough to hold all of your personal belongings? Are there multiple private showers and steam rooms separated by gender? Make sure upon a tour that the gym has all of the accommodations you find important for a daily workout routine set up in an organized, efficient way.

Amenities

Some gyms will have added perks or “extras” that are included in a gym membership. Check out all of these options before making a decision on your membership. For example, does the facility offer tanning beds or a HydroMassage bed? Do they provide members with towels and yoga mats?

Quality

Explore what kinds of machines the facility has, how new they are, and whether or not they have the kinds of features your body needs. For example, if you require special care for your joints and knees, you will want to make sure the gym has a treadmill with shock-absorption.

Fitness Classes

Find out whether or not the gym provides group exercise classes such as cycling, yoga, pilates, cardio, and Zumba classes. If working out in a group setting with an instructor for a set amount of time is something that you definitely desire in a gym membership, make sure they offer the kinds of classes you prefer.

Personal Training

Personal training is high up on the list of importance for many people when deciding where to sign on for gym membership, as it should be. Do they provide various options and packages for fitness training by a certified personal trainer? Make sure they set personalized goals for you and coach you on how to reach them successfully.

Atmosphere

Let’s be honest, no one wants to go to the gym and be constantly bothered by another loud member slamming machines, or a sales person trying to gain more commissions on fitness gear. Make sure the staff is helpful, friendly, and aware of member behavior around the gym. Your work out should be relaxing and cleansing.

Other Members

If you’re serious about your work out routine, steer clear of gyms that become more of a social hangout than a productive work out facility. Make sure the clientele being served takes their membership seriously, as you will.

Reviews

Always take a look at what other people have to say about the gyms you are considering for membership. You can learn a lot from community reviews on websites like Yelp, which can definitely help you make your decision.
